Greenology compounds power Prysmian’s green shift

Prysmian Group has transitioned from using standard recycled materials to Axjo’s innovative Greenology Compounds. This shift allows them to maintain high performance standards while reducing their environmental footprint.

By adopting Greenology Compounds, Prysmian Group supports a more sustainable future through the use of eco-friendly materials, aligning further with Axjo’s mission to promote circular solutions in the industry.

Hello, Gian Luca Agliardi, Sustainability Manager, Prysmian Group. Why is sustainability work important to you?

The Prysmian Group operates in a crucial industry for the energy transition and the digitalization of modern society. If we want to decarbonize our homes and activities, we need to electrify all that we can and reach 100% green energy in our grid. Power cables are therefore a crucial enabler of decarbonization, as we need more of them to achieve the climate and social goals we aspire to. A similar pattern exists in the telecom business, where digitalization is a lever that can enable more social justice and fair access to educational resources for everyone. This is the main reason Prysmian is keen and committed to sustainable operations and solutions.

How do you work with sustainability at your facilities today?

Our sustainability journey started some years ago (our first sustainability report was in 2014), and we are now fully integrating sustainability into our company strategy and way of doing business. This means we are active in several areas, taking a holistic approach to Sustainability.

We have set Net Zero targets in collaboration with the SBT initiative, planning to fully decarbonize our operations by 2035 and our supply chain by 2050. We are investing €100m to achieve this target. We are keen on developing circular solutions, focusing on reducing waste and giving new life to it. We engage suppliers and customers to develop joint solutions for reducing emissions, waste, and improving recyclability.

What is your focus in terms of sustainability?

  • Deeper analysis of upstream scope 3 emissions and active engagement with our suppliers to assess the CO₂ content of sourced materials. Once analyzed, we will outline an action plan to decrease them.
  • Focus on our waste production, exploring opportunities to recycle waste both internally and externally.
  • Sourcing raw materials with low CO₂ footprints, including bio-based or recycled content.
  • Impact on local communities: launch CSR projects to generate positive impacts in the communities where we operate.
  • EU Taxonomy: Foster STEM careers for women to achieve our gender parity targets.
  • Build an internal sustainability training platform to spread sustainability culture and activate employees to generate new sustainability initiatives.

How important is it for you to work with suppliers who have sustainability as their main focus?

It is at the top of our agenda. We have set Net Zero targets for scope 3 and are committed to reaching them. This requires collaboration with both our suppliers and customers to develop joint solutions to decarbonize the entire value chain. Most of the emissions related to our products occur in the use phase and the purchased materials categories, so these must be our first priorities.
